Runscope Offers New Service To Test Live API Calls For Improving The Quality Of Mobile Apps
Runscope, which develops tools that monitor API traffic, has launched a new automated API and backend service testing tool to improve the quality of mobile apps.
The new Runscope Radar service, launched at the AWS re:Invent conference in Las Vegas, is designed to alleviate the concerns that come with changing backend APIs. It allows app maintainers to verify that their backend services are returning the data their apps expect with the intent of reducing the frequency of app crashes. But testing can be a fragile process that if it goes wrong can cause a poor experience for the customer. Runscope Radar is designed to help customers change their apps’ backend services without breaking it. The intent is to provide ways to improve the service without disrupting the customer experience.
With Radar, a developer starts with a list of requests and sets the parameters to determine if the API is working. The tests are based on real requests made from apps for high-fidelity recreations of real-world situations.
A customer receives notifications based upon the completion or failure of any test. The service integrates with services like CircleCi, GitHub, Heroku, Jenkins and TeamCity to run API tests on commits, builds or deploys.
For example, a developer consuming an API just wants to make sure that it is not affecting the end-user experience. If an API breaks it disrupts the communication.
“Broken services, broken apps,” said John Sheehan, CEO of Runscope, to me at the conference after his presentation. “Even internal services powering your apps need to be always available.”
APIs are now widely used by developers but reliability is still an issue, as there can be any number of issues with the numerous devices and platforms people use.
There are still few ways to manage API reliability. Companies go through a process of checking with API providers to determine if they can be counted on.
Runscope is a company that offers a service that will become more in demand as APIs become ever more common. The process to test APIs is for the most part a manual one that needs to be more automated. This is especially true as more startups emerge that are pure API services offered as mobile apps.

Are you sick Get ready for your iPhone to take your temperature and diagnose your illness
My iPhone can tell me where I am in the world, remind me when I need to take my vitamins and bring me face-to-face with relatives all over in an instant, but it cant tell me why I have this nagging cough -- at least not yet. As Fast Company reports, a new iPhone app/accessory combo hopes to change that. Its called Kinsa, and it all starts with a thermometer.
After plugging the thermometer into your iPhone via the headphone port, it will read your temperature in real time and display it on the screen, letting you spot a fever as soon as your temp passes a healthy mark. Once the thermometer accessory has done its job, the Kinsa app takes your hand and helps you make sense of whatever symptoms you may have. The app taps into account what the Kinsa team calls "health weather" -- a database that can reveal if a particular illness is making the rounds in your area.
Kinsa is a powerful tool for adults, but its designed to work better than a traditional thermometer when it comes to kids as well. Playful graphics and bright colors give the app a very relaxing vibe, which isnt exactly the norm when it comes to medical devices. Kinsa isnt quite ready for retail just yet, but you can sign up on the companys website to be notified as soon as you can get your hands on your own.

Apples iWatch Said to Arrive in Separate 1 7 and 1 3 Inch Display Sizes for Men and Women
According to the Korea Herald (via Unwired View), Hsieh offered a few additional details on Apples plans at a conference today, noting that the company will be using the two sizes to offer watches targeting men with a larger 1.7-inch display and women with a smaller 1.3-inch option.
Apple’s wearable iWatch is expected to come with a 1.7-inch OLED display for men’s watches and a 1.3-inch OLED screen for women, David Hsieh, DisplaySearch’s Vice President of the Greater China Market, said at a conference today in Taiwan, citing Apple sources. [...]
It is yet to be confirmed whether the displays will be flexible but sources said it was a possibility, since Apple will want to upstage Samsung’s Galaxy Gear.
Just days ago, fellow NPD DisplaySearch analyst Paul Gagnon noted that Apple appears to have put its major television product plans on hold for the time being in order to focus on wearables such as the iWatch. Apples ambitious TV plans have reportedly been stymied by difficult negotiations with content providers, with the company feeling that it needs to have the content side in place before being able to offer something more substantial than the current Apple TV box on the hardware side.

Improved App Store Search Engine Now Corrects For Users’ “Fat Finger” Mistakes Other Misspellings

A recent change to Apples App Store search engine now leads to improved search results for misspelled queries with small typos, weve learned.
In addition, searchers looking for an app they know by name, but are unsure if it has spaces in the title, are also seeing better results. For example, those looking for the highly ranked “QuizUp” game wouldnt have found it before if they had typed in “Quiz Up” with a space. Now it appears.
Sources familiar with the matter confirm to us that these App Store search engine changes went into effect a few weeks ago.
The improvements could lead to increased app downloads for affected developers, particularly those with hard-to-spell or lengthy titles, as many are only now beginning to realize.
“Thats great news for app publishers and yet another step in Apples efforts to improve app discoverability,” says Craig Palli, Chief Strategy Officer at mobile app marketer Fiksu, who also confirmed these changes following our inquiry.
The improvement is no small matter when it comes to pitting Apples App Store versus competitor Google Play, which has long since offered a spell checking function. For example, earlier this year, App Store SEO firm SearchMan had looked into the differences between the two platforms, and found that a simple misspelling of the word “calendar” (i.e., spelling it “calender”) led to 100 times more results in Google Play. It seems the only iOS apps returned were those who thought to include the misspelling as one of their keywords.
The company had run through a handful of misspellings to further demonstrate this problem (see slide 8 here, and above), which showed how much better Google Play was at correcting for typos and poorly spelled words.
SearchMan CEO Niren Hiro ran these same queries again for the date of November 24th, 2013 and found the results had definitely shifted, though not always for the better. (See chart below).
In the case where a misspelling returned few results, like “newz” which had 9 hits or “camara” which had 862, there was a dramatic improvement. But he spotted something else, too: there appears to be a cap of roughly 2,220 results on the misspelled words right now, which is why you see that misspelled keywords like “shoping” and “pocker” are actually seeing fewer results than before. This is likely the result of the App Store now correcting for the misspelling instead of looking for the exact keyword match.
Though the changes will lead some consumers to apps they may not have otherwise discovered, or at least get them there more quickly if they had made a “fat finger” mistake, they dont really represent a large volume of App Store queries.
In another test, George Lawrence, founder at App Store optimization firm Straply, pulled data for all the misspelled variations of the phrase “angry birds” on the iOS App Store, for example.
The correct spelling drove 98.48% of searches, but no misspelled variation even generated one percent of search volume. “Angery birds” was 0.46% of searches, “angri birds” was 0.37%, “angry blrds” was 0.32% of searches, and so on. There were only five misspelled variations that drove enough search volume to even rank, says Lawrence.
“Misspellings and mistypings are definitely happening in the App Store, but according to our volume estimates, those types of mistakes are still very much in the long tail,” he explains. “Many of the volumes are so low, they round to zero.”
Though misspellings may represent the long tail of App Store searches, correcting for these queries is an important feature for any search engine to offer, whether app search or otherwise. However, its clear that in search, as expected, Google has had the advantage here – its nearly 2014, and only now has Apple made this sort of basic feature live.
Still, the improvements should be positively received by the majority of the iOS developer community, except of course for the App Store equivalent of a domain name squatter, who may have been erroneously benefitting from users typos and mistakes until now.

Best emulators for Android
These create a virtual game console within your device, letting it play digital versions of classic games called ROMs. You won’t find any packaged with these emulators – you’ll have to find them separately.

Almost all the classic 90s consoles are emulated near-perfectly on Android at this point, from the original Gameboy to the Sony PlayStation. We’ve checked out emulators for all the main consoles and handhelds to find out the top emulator apps you should download today.
If you just want a quick dabble, also be sure to check out RetroArch. It’s a multi-system emulator that can handle many of the systems here, but won’t necessarily get you the performance of the dedicated emulators.
Best N64 emulator: SuperN64
Price: £1.19
Available from Google Play
The N64 is one of the most sought-after consoles when it comes to emulation. There are loads of people out there who want to re-live their first experiences with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Mario 64.
Android emulation of the N64 is still a little patchy in places, but OpenGL support means you can see the game rendered at resolutions much higher than the actual N64 was capable of. That means no jagged edges in polygons.
There are lots of Android N64 emulators, but most are based on the same source: the Mupen PC emulator. So the differences are more about optimisation and features. The one we had the most luck with was SuperN64. You’ll see glitches in some games, but with a current mid-range phone you should be able to play most titles at full speed.
Best SNES emulator for Android: Snes9x EX Plus
Price: Free
Available from Google Play
The SNES was home to some of the very best games of the 90s. It’s amusing that many modern games take up as much as 100,000 times as much data as a SNES classic. We’ll let you decide whether Super Mario World is actually more fun than generic shooter X in 2014.
There are a few paid options out there, but there’s also a perfectly good freebie: Snes9X EX Plus. While not quite as glitzy-looking as the paid-for SuperGnes, ROM support is excellent and we were able to play everything we tried at full speed on the Moto G.
This emulator offers scaling options, to make these old 16-bit games look a bit more as if they belong on our fancy high-res phones. They sharpen-up the visuals, but purists might not approve.
Best Mega Drive emulator for Android: Gensoid
Price: Free
Available from Emu Paradise
Sega Mega Drive emulation, or Genesis if you’re in the US, hasn’t had quite as much attention as its Nintendo arch-rival. Twenty years on, it seems Nintendo won that war.
There are a few decent Mega Drive Android emulators out there, although our top pick is not actually available on Google Play. Gensoid offers good performance and support, even though – like most other Mega Drive emulators – it hasn’t been updated in the last couple of years. Fingers crossed it’ll still work when Android Lollipop lands.
It offers reasonable controls, save/load states and fast forward, which just speeds up the action if you want to speed through a boring non-skippable cutscene.
Best Gameboy Advance emulator for Android: My Boy!
Price: £2.92
Available from Google Play
GBA emulator My Boy! is one of the few emulation apps actually made by the people that produced the core emulator software – often it’s someone else’s work, with a new front-end and some extra features applied. In the end the difference is minimal, but might make your feel better about paying for the ‘full’ version.
Dabblers may well be happy with the free edition of My Boy!, though, which simply cuts back a few features. Upgrade to the full My Boy! and you get multiplayer, better save/load support and gyroscope support.
We found this to be one of the most impressive emulators of the lot, both for its good presentation and that the GBA’s relatively limited on-console controls make a better fit for a phone. You don’t have to worry about six face buttons, just two. Phew.
Best Game Gear/Master System emulator for Android: Gearoid
Price: Free
Available from The Old Computer
As the systems are so much less popular than the Mega Drive, it’s no wonder there are fewer Master System and Game Gear emulators out there. However, there is one that can handle both of these minor classics: Gearoid.
It’s available for free, and is made by Yongzh, one of the leading figures in the emulation scene. However, you won’t find it in Google Play or any of the main third-party app stores. You’ll need to side-load this one.
While not one of the highest-profile emulators, you still get plenty of extra features including physical controller support and save states.
Best Nintendo DS emulator for Android: DraStic
Price: £3.75
Available from Google Play
One of the most recent systems that can be (mostly) successfully emulated by an Android is the Nintendo DS. Bless Nintendo for not really caring about graphics, or anything remotely high-end, hardware-wise.
Trying to fit the DS’s two screens onto one Android display comes with issues, but we didn’t actually find this emulator any fiddlier than the Sega Mega Drive or SNES. It’s remarkably playable, unless you try a game that demands lots of touchscreen and button action at the same time.
Unlike the other DS emulators, DraStic offers excellent performance too. We got full speed play with the Moto G in most games, and we imagine even humbler phones could hack it too.
Best Gameboy emulator for Android: My Old Boy!
Price: £2.38
Available from Google Play
The father of our best GBA pick, My Old Boy! plays Gameboy and GBC games. And just like the GBA emulator, it’s a cracker.
Not only are performance and the interface great, we also found that the games make the transition to your phone’s screen with real ease. It’s not hard to imagine why – the way you hold your phone in portrait is quite a lot like holding a Gameboy.
If you’ve turned your nose up at trying something as old as a Gameboy game, give one a try – they’re generally much less problematic control-wise than SNES ones.
Best PS1 emulator for Android: FPse
Price: £2.27
Available from Google Play
The console that brought CD-based gaming to the masses (the TurboGrafx CD was nice, but no-one bought it), emulating PlayStation games requires quite a lot of storage. You’re not going to fit dozens on your phone’s internal memory, unlike the rival N64.
However, the relatively low power of the PlayStations internals means most current Android devices can handle the task of emulation pretty well.
There are two hero PlayStation emulators out there at present – FPse and ePSXe. Both cost a couple of pounds and neither offers a trial/demo version.
Which is better? Both are solid, offering good compatibility and performance. They both offer OpenGL support too, letting the phone render the game at a higher resolution than it would have originally been displayed. However, we’ll side with FPse as it was been updated very recently and offers an active forum online. ePSXe feels a bit stagnant in comparison.
Alternatively, RetroArch offers fairly good PS1 emulation for free.
Best NES emulator for Android: Nostalgia.NES
Price: Free
Available from Google Play
The console that started it all for many, heading back to some of those NES classics will be like gorging on a nostalgia chocolate box. And several good NES emulators are available for free.
Our pick of the bunch is Nostalgia.NES, currently available in ad-supported form for free, or you can get rid of the ads for a mere £1.20. Much as we found with the Gameboy Advance and Gameboy, the two-button NES controller ports over fantastically to the touchscreen.
Nostalgia.NES offers some great features too, including OpenGL support to improve the graphics a little, light gun emulation, autosave, Wi-Fi multiplayer and game rewinding. Given NES games are often much harder than what we’re used to today, the latter is a nice extra.
Best MAME (arcade) emulator for Android: Mame4Droid
Price: Free
Available from Google Play
The MAME project has been around for almost 20 years, and it’s a mammoth endeavour: to emulate every arcade machine. It’s evidence of what indie collaboration online is capable of.
There are two versions of the MAME emulator available on Google Play, one intended for lower-power devices, the other a little more demanding. Each supports a different ROM set. Through the decade-plus development of MAME, these different ROM sets have told you exactly which games are compatible or semi-compatible, at any time.
The higher-end version of Mame4droid supportsover 8000 ROM sets – over 8000 games, in other words. Feature support is excellent, with touchscreen light guns, external controller compatibility and various image filters.

Android 4 4 for Galaxy Note 3 now seeding in India and Baltic region

We guess the update process will now be hitting full steam and may more countries will be joining those in a few days. Reportedly the OTA update weighs at about 360MB, so you might want to make sure you download it over Wi-Fi when the time comes.

Asustek said to be adopting Qualcomm solution for new ZenFone
![]() |
ASUS CEO Jerry Shen with Zenfone 1st Gen |
Asustek declined to comment about the news, while Intel pointed out that it will continue to provide subsidies to partners to help them cut costs.
Asustek is planning to showcase second-generation ZenFone smartphones at CES 2015 in January 2015, but whether the company will also reveal the models using Qualcomm solutions is still unknown.
Asustek CEO Jerry Shen stated at a recently investor meeting that Asusteks ZenFone series will all adopt Intels platform prior to the end of March 2015. However, in the second quarter of 2015, Asustek will add models using non-Intel solutions for the NT$4,990 (US$163) pricing range. Intels platform will still account for 60% of Asusteks estimated 16 million smartphone shipments for 2015.
Some market watchers originally believed Asustek will use solutions from MediaTek for its second-generation ZenFone, but the sources pointed out that Asustek looks like it is approaching Qualcomm, a major competitor of Intel in the smartphone area for partnership. Qualcomm also has partnerships with Asustek over tablets, Padfone and ZenWatch.
Since Asustek is a major partner of Intel in the smartphone industry and Intels platform has not been reported as having any shortages or defects, the sources believes Qualcomms entry into Asusteks supply chain shows that Intel and Asustek negotiations include pricing issues.
Intels cooperation with Spreadtrum and Rockchip as well as adjustments over marketing subsidies and product pricing also concern Asustek.
However, some market watchers believe that if Intel refuses to respond to the challenge from Asustek, the smartphone maker may put itself in a difficult situation since the Qualcomm platform has almost no cost advantage and Asustek is unlikely to receive extensive support from Qualcomm, as it is not one a major Qualcomm partner.

XiaoMi 10 million units sold for the Mi 2 Series

XiaoMi has reached the 10 million units milestone with its Mi 2 series (Mi 2, Mi 2S and Mi 2A) in 11 months. Last year, they sold "only" 7.19 million smartphones in total.
The Chinese company should exceed its 20 million prediction. There have been more than 7.5 million HongMi pre-orders and the Mi 3 is launching this fall before the end of the year.
Everything looking good for Lei Jun, CEO of XiaoMi.

The device is merely a modification of the previous models of the company, in order to make it more robust and suitable for use by small users, thanks to a simplified interface. As you can see from the pictures it Medion Junior Tab S7322 is characterized by a very thick shell with the edges, which at the same time provide a better grip for the hands of children, protect against knocks and falls and strengthen, in general the ‘entire structure of the device, making it more durable.
The display is IPS type, with 7-inch diagonal and a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, but inside we find a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 1.6 GHz, supported by 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of memory internal, expandable through the use of microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 128 GB. The operating system is Google Android 4.4 KitKat. It is not known at the time instead if there is an update to version 5.0 Lollipop. Two cameras, front and back, each 2 Mpixel and modules Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 will complete the equipment.
So this is a great solution for the target to which it addresses and, if you think that will be proposed at only 99.99 Euros, the opportunity is even greedier. Having been developed with the utmost attention to the smallest, the Medion Junior Tab also allows parents to control and restrict access to websites, applications and other content of their choice, thanks to the pre-installed software. Also good autonomy provided, equal to 10 hours.

The User Profile has been leaked of Samsung Galaxy S6. Such a file is not everything, it can still change and is not always 100% reliable. Nevertheless confirms earlier rumors and count all the single ‘bewijsjes’ together.
For what it’s worth telling this User Agent Profile file to us that the successor of the Galaxy S5 is equipped with a Quad HD screen and a 64-bit processor. Now we have come to similar rumors ignore earlier. Despite this message it does not tell us is assumed that the screen size of the S6 comes out at 5.5 inches. Samsung’s new flagship is not so little boy. In terms of processor also few surprises. A 64-bit processor was in the outlook and thus is the choice of either a 810 or a Snapdragon own Exynos chip.
recent report tells us that Samsung is between 80 and 90% of the Galaxy S6 will equip with its own Exynos processor, possibly the Exynos 7420. The rest will come with the Snapdragon 810. At present, the ratio in the S5 exact opposite. Samsung would worry about the delivery of the Qualcomm chip. Who would have overheating problems with intensive tasks. Samsung would be safe than sorry and want to take still go its own processor. In terms of cameras, we come from possible Galaxy S6 on a 16 + 5 megapixel camera. Samsung may opt again for a camera sensor from Sony, possibly the IM240 as in the Galaxy Note 4. We expect the launch of the Galaxy S6 early March of this year
