IFA 2014 Day One Announcements Roundup

Samsung and other electronics companies used the IFA trade show in Berlin to showcase their holiday lineups.
New smartphones, computerized wristwatches and a virtual-reality headset were among the gadgets announced Wednesday.
Samsung Electronics
The Korean electronics company says it will start selling two new smartphones and a virtual-reality headset in October. The Galaxy Note 4 will have a 5.7-inch screen, while the Galaxy Note Edges will be 5.6 inches.
The Edge will be notable in having a side display for quick access to the flashlight, Twitter, news and frequently used apps. While the main screen remains flat, the right edge extends and curves until it reaches the back.
Weather and time can be seen from the side when the phone is laid on a table or nightstand. The phones camera functions more like a stand-alone, point-and-shoot camera, as the shutter button and other functions appear on top when the phone is held horizontally.
The side display also provides one-tap access to such tools as the flashlight and stopwatch, akin to what Apple offers in the iPhones Control Center with a swipe up from the bottom.
Samsung will look to app developers to find new ways to use the feature.
Samsung didnt announce prices. In the U.S., last years Galaxy Note 3 went for about $700 without a contract, or $300 with one. Prices are likely to be similar for the Note 4 and higher for the Edge.
Both models will have a 16 megapixel rear camera and 3.7 megapixels on the front. The front camera will be able to take sharper selfies than the typical camera phone. It will also have a wide-angle feature to fit more people into selfies by stitching multiple images together.
Meanwhile, Samsung will sell a $200 Gear VR headset as a companion to the Note 4. It wont work with the Edge or other phones. The Note 4 attaches to the headset, which has sensors to gauge the heads position and tells the phone which part of a 360-degree image to display. It can be used to give people an immersive experience with concerts, aerial footage and games, though more content will have to be created for it.
The VR was developed with Oculus, which Facebook bought this year.
Sony
Sony unveiled three devices with its signature waterproof capabilities: The 5.2-inchXperia Z3 smartphone, the 4.6-inch Xperia Z3 Compact and the 8-inch Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. All three are expected this fall, with prices yet to be announced.
For the first time, one of the phones will be available in the U.S. at about the same time as the rest of the world, rather than months later. T-Mobile will carry the Xperia Z3 phone.
Sony also unveiled a cheaper, 4.5-inch phone, the Xperia E3, without waterproof capabilities.
Also coming from the Japanese company is a new SmartBand fitness device. Unlike its predecessor, it will have a small display so you can see the status of various activities.
Meanwhile, Sonys SmartWatch 3 will have GPS capabilities built in, allowing for more accurate tracking of outdoor fitness activities.

Acer
Despite releasing three new tablets in Berlin, the Taiwanese PC maker insisted that keyboard computering isnt dead.
Acer unveiled several convertible notebooks with screens that can be flipped, swiveled or even detached completely. It also released the Revo One, a PC that functions as a home entertainment hub.
Acer also showed off its Liquid Z500 smartphone, claiming its the smallest and lightest 5-inch device around. It announced plans to release a 50-euro smartphone ($66) next year.
Asustek Computer
Fellow Taiwanese manufacturer Asus showcased its ZenWatch wearable device.
The smartwatch can be paired with newer Android phones to display information and monitor the wearers activity. The watch can be used to find a phone, something Samsung has done with some of its watches - as long as the phone is also from Samsung.

HP splits in two separate business one for PC and printing the other for Enteprirse
HP has officially announced that it is splitting into two companies. Hewlett-Packard is going to spin off its PC and printer division leaving its Enterprise and services unit as separate business.
Dion Weisler will take the wheel of the HP’s new PC and printer business. Sadly, however, the company is going to rise the planned layoffs from 45,000 to 55,000. Rumors surrounding the reason for the split suggest that HP had failed in its talks to Dell and Lenovo to sell its PC business.
3D printing is also another area where the new company is going to set its focus. “As the market leader in printing and personal systems, an independent HP Inc. will be extremely well positioned to deliver that innovation across our traditional markets as well as extend our leadership into new markets like 3-D printing and new computing experiences — inventing technology that empowers people to create, interact and inspire like never before,” says Weisler.
HP expects to see the split complete by the end of the fiscal 2015.

1. Network bands in regions may be different, depending on the mobile operator and your location. 4G LTE only available in choose countries. Upload and download speeds also depend on the mobile provider.
2. Available storage is less due to phone software. Approximately 11 GB storage available for user content. Available storage is topic to change base on phone software updates and apps usage.
3. Battery times (speak time, standby time and more) are subject to network and phone usage.
A Standby time specification ("specification") is an industry standard that is only intended to permit comparison of different mobile devices under the same circumstances. Power consumption in a standby state is strongly dependent on factors including but not limited to network, settings, location, movement, signal strength and mobile traffic. Comparisons of different mobile devices using such a specification can therefore only be done in a controlled laboratory environment. When using any mobile device in genuine life circumstances for which the mobile device is intended, the standby time could be considerably lower and will be strongly dependent upon the factors mentioned above.
Note: Specifications are subject to change without prior notice.

25 HTC One X tips
The One X is HTCs mighty flagship smart phone, and with its 4.7-inch screen and powerful quad-core processor, it could power a battleship. But theres more than just impressive specs to the One X, so join me as I find 25 ways to get more out of this Android hero.
With just a few simple tweaks of the settings, you can make typing in text less of a chore, get more creative with your camera and fine-tune the interface until your thumbs get sore. I used a One X running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4.1. Read on to find out more.

1. Customise home screens
HTCs Sense user interface has a unique way of quickly adding widgets to multiple home screens. Long-press on any empty space and youll be presented with a catalogue with tabs for available widgets, apps and shortcuts. There is a horizontally scrolling carousel of all home screens shown at the top of the screen, which enables you to quickly add widgets and shortcuts to multiple home screens.
2. Add and remove home screens
Change the number of home screens by making a pinching gesture to open the home screen preview mode. From there, tap the Add Panel area to add more (up to seven). To get rid of a screen, long press and drag to the Remove area.
3. Home screen calculator widgets The calculator widget deserves a special mention. Having a calculator on your phone is great, but you always have to find the icon. With this widget, you can have a basic calculator only a swipe away.
4. Lock screen modes
To change how the lock screen looks, go into the Personalize section of the Settings app and select Lock screen style. Select from various themes -- Productivity for maximum notifications or Friend Stream for the social media junkies, and so on.
5. Swipe for keyboard sections With default settings in force, swiping sideways across the keyboard switches between the Qwerty keyboard and the two numeric and symbol keyboards.
6. Get extra predictions via drop-down list
If you often find that your intended word isnt in the top three predictions, there is a drop-down button to view additional predictions.
7. Manage your personal dictionary You can selectively remove words from the custom HTC dictionary such as accidental additions. Theres also the option to backup or import a custom dictionary. Youll find this in Settings > Language & Keyboard > HTC Sense Input > Personal Dictionary.
8. Switch keyboard styles
The HTC One X has two alternatives to the Qwerty keyboard. Go to Settings > Language & Keyboard > HTC Sense Input > Advanced Settings > Keyboard types. Options are Standard (Qwerty), Phone (T9), and Compact. The latter has two letters per key, a cross between Qwerty and T9 -- rather like the Nokia E55.
9. Keyboard trace
If youre a fan of the Swype keyboard, the HTC One X has it built in. Go into the HTC Sense Input settings and turn on the Trace Keyboard switch.
10. Disable fast boot
In the Power section of the Settings menu, the option for Fast Boot is selected by default, meaning the phone can have a quicker start-up time. However, Fast Boot isnt thorough enough when clearing temporary data, which can prevent a reboot from curing a problem caused by a bug-ridden application. If youre using beta software, disable Fast Boot.
11. Select USB connection mode
To use the HTC One X with a PC over USB, youll need to go into the Connect to PC section of the Settings app, as the default setting is Charge only. To use as a USB drive, select Disk Drive. Choose HTC Sync Manager for using with HTCs desktop software. To use the phone as a 3G dongle, select USB tethering. Finally, Internet pass-through allows the One X to get online via a PCs USB port.
12. Free up storage space
When you have filled up either the internal or phone storage drives, go to the Storage section of the Settings application and look for the respective Make more space options and follow the prompts.
13. Incoming call settings
The Call section of the Settings application has options for several useful call handling features. I recommend that you enable the Declined calls option (this will help with tip 24), and Save to contacts for automatically saving unknown numbers.
14. Google Calendar
Because HTC customises Android with its Sense user interface, some standard applications are replaced, such as the Calendar application (pictured below left). Fortunately, Google recently released its Calendar app to the Play store.
15. Google Chrome
Androids standard browser is good but nothing really beats Google Chrome (pictured above right). Its available in the Play store, and synchronises with your tabs and bookmarks from all your other devices.
16. Activate Dropbox and photo uploading
The HTC One X comes with Dropbox already installed, and when you sign in, Dropbox increases your limit by 25GB for two years. Be sure to turn on automatic photo uploading, so all of your images will automatically be backed up.
17. Polaris Office accesses Dropbox & SkyDrive
If you need to work with Office documents while on the move and your company doesnt work in Google Docs, do not fear! The HTC One X comes installed with Polaris Office (pictured below left), which doesnt just let you work with files stored on the phone, but also with files saved in Dropbox and SkyDrive.
18. PDF Viewer
If you have PDFs in the cloud that you need to access while youre out and about, load up the built-in PDF reader and look for the Dropbox and SkyDrive icons. These will let you log into your cloud accounts and find your files (pictured above right).
19. Enable Quick Controls for the built-in browser
If youve opted to use the built-in browser then go into its settings, then Labs. From there, enable Quick Controls mode. This will remove the URL and tab bars, and will show a radial control interface when you swipe in from the left or right of the screen instead.
20. Camera settings
HTC has completely revamped the Android camera app -- just tapping the A scenes button reveals effects for panoramas, HDR, group portraits and more. Tap the blue button in the top-right corner to reveal another set of effects such as distortion, sepia, vignette and more.
21. Slow-motion video
To film slow-motion video, look to the top of the scenes list for the corresponding option. Dont get too excited as the results are quite jerky, but its better than nothing, right?
22. Taking screenshots
On the HTC One X, take screenshots by holding the power button and volume-down button together.
23. Two-finger fast scrolling
When scrolling through the People or Music apps, speed up scrolling by using two fingers.
24. Managing incoming calls
Make sure youve enabled the options in tip 13. While in a call, switch to speakerphone by laying the phone on its front. When rejecting a call, look for the following two options -- the first lets you compose a text message to the caller and the second creates a calendar task about the caller.
25. Play music with the volume buttons
As you increase and decrease volume, the HTC One X plays chimes. For a some creative fun, you can use this effect to play random tunes.

Googles Android One Set to Add to Samsungs Worries in India

Googles partnership with three Indian phone makers is set to rev up fast-growing demand for lower priced smartphones, and spell more trouble for Samsung Electronics which is rapidly losing share in emerging markets.
Micromax Infomatics Ltd, Karbonn Mobiles and Spice Group are the first phone manufacturers to sign up for Googles Android One initiative, which provides specifications for key hardware parts. Some of the new phones are due to hit the market this month.
(Also see: Google Sends Invites for September 15 India Event; Android One Launch Likely)
The aim is a vast improvement in quality that would lead to a surge in demand for low-end Android phones. Currently many cheap emerging market smartphones run different and somewhat customised versions of the Android operating system, which along with the many variations in hardware make apps on those phones prone to glitches.
While Google plans to push Android One globally, India, the worlds third-biggest and fastest growing smartphone market, offers fertile ground for immediate results. Many Indians are buying a smartphone for the first time and a strong reception for Android One could promote common standards and consolidation in a market where more than 80 smartphone companies operate.
But any boom for higher-quality low-cost smartphones in India and other price conscious markets has the potential to exert intense pricing pressure on Samsung. The South Korean firm uses a customised version of the Android operating system but focuses on higher-margin offerings like its Galaxy S series.
"A major threat for Samsung is that Android One will accelerate the race to the bottom on smartphone pricing," said Neil Mawston, a UK-based analyst at Strategy Analytics.
"Android One now makes Google a foe, not just a friend, for Samsung."
A major strategy rethink for low to mid-tier products is now in order for the worlds biggest phone maker and top seller in India, analysts say, particularly as Samsung is also losing share to Apple Inc at the higher-end.
Gains for Google
For Google, a strong uptake of Android One smartphones should increase access to the Internet and Googles suite of products.
Analysts and industry sources also note the potential for Google to expand revenue in ways more favorable to itself than in the past, as Android One phones wont come with the heavy customisation that Samsung and other phone makers using the Android operating system provide.
That will mean more default settings for Google products and less competition from rival search engines and other app stores.
For the Indian phone manufacturers, they are banking on Android One to be the weapon that helps them grab further share as well as providing a launch pad for more exports.
Karbonn hopes the programme will expand its overseas revenue to near 20 percent in the next two years, from 5-7 percent now. It is looking to export to markets such as Europe, South Africa and Russia, Chairman Sudhir Hasija told Reuters.
Pricing pressure
Samsung still leads Indias smartphone market - a segment expected to propel the countrys annual cellphone shipment revenues to as much as $20 billion by 2017, up from more than $14 billion this year, according to Counterpoint Research.
But its grip is looking shakier. Its second-quarter smartphone market share tumbled to 25.3 percent from 33.3 percent in the first quarter, while No. 2 maker Micromax jumped to 19.1 percent from 16.7 percent. Karbonn has 5.9 percent.
How much immediate pressure Samsung will come under will depend on prices.
Announcing Android One phones in June, Google touted pricing under $100 (6,000 rupees) but local media, citing industry sources, have said that may be too ambitious and the phones could be priced between 7,000 and 10,000 rupees.
Karbonn, Micromax and Google declined to comment on the reports. Spice did not respond to a request for comment.
While Samsung does sell cheaply priced phones in India, its marketing is focused on high-end products around 40,000 rupees. One of its most popular models sells for about 20,500 rupees. Samsung declined to provide its average selling price for smartphones in India.
Competition is coming not only from local players using Android One. Mozilla announced this month a low-cost smartphone in India based on Firefox operating system and priced at just $33.
(Also see: Intex Cloud FX Firefox OS Smartphone Launched at Rs. 1,999)
How Samsung responds to Android One in India is set to have big ramifications for other markets.
In China too, for example, Samsung has rapidly lost share, falling to rank No. 2 in the second quarter behind Xiaomi Inc, a firm which did not even place in the top five in the same period a year ago.
One key factor for Samsung to consider is whether it could and should adopt Android One for its cheaper phones.
"Samsung needs to figure out whether its going to stay in (the) market at the lower end and come lower or whether its going to maybe focus on higher level segments," said Rachel Lashford, a Singapore-based analyst at tech research firm Canalys.
Samsung declined to comment on its strategy in India and other emerging markets. It said in a July earnings call it plans to revamp its mid-to-low-tier line-up with more aggressive pricing and a focus on a smaller set of products.
