      Best emulators for Android

There are thousands and thousands of games made for Android devices. However, a humble Android phone or tablet can also be used as a little gaming time machine, to re-play the games of your youth with the help of emulator apps.

These create a virtual game console within your device, letting it play digital versions of classic games called ROMs. You won’t find any packaged with these emulators – you’ll have to find them separately.

Almost all the classic 90s consoles are emulated near-perfectly on Android at this point, from the original Gameboy to the Sony PlayStation. We’ve checked out emulators for all the main consoles and handhelds to find out the top emulator apps you should download today.

If you just want a quick dabble, also be sure to check out RetroArch. It’s a multi-system emulator that can handle many of the systems here, but won’t necessarily get you the performance of the dedicated emulators.

      Best N64 emulator: SuperN64

      Price: £1.19
      Available from Google Play

The N64 is one of the most sought-after consoles when it comes to emulation. There are loads of people out there who want to re-live their first experiences with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Mario 64.

Android emulation of the N64 is still a little patchy in places, but OpenGL support means you can see the game rendered at resolutions much higher than the actual N64 was capable of. That means no jagged edges in polygons.

There are lots of Android N64 emulators, but most are based on the same source: the Mupen PC emulator. So the differences are more about optimisation and features. The one we had the most luck with was SuperN64. You’ll see glitches in some games, but with a current mid-range phone you should be able to play most titles at full speed.

Best SNES emulator for Android: Snes9x EX Plus

      Price: Free
      Available from Google Play

The SNES was home to some of the very best games of the 90s. It’s amusing that many modern games take up as much as 100,000 times as much data as a SNES classic. We’ll let you decide whether Super Mario World is actually more fun than generic shooter X in 2014.

There are a few paid options out there, but there’s also a perfectly good freebie: Snes9X EX Plus. While not quite as glitzy-looking as the paid-for SuperGnes, ROM support is excellent and we were able to play everything we tried at full speed on the Moto G.

This emulator offers scaling options, to make these old 16-bit games look a bit more as if they belong on our fancy high-res phones. They sharpen-up the visuals, but purists might not approve.

Best Mega Drive emulator for Android: Gensoid

      Price: Free
      Available from Emu Paradise

Sega Mega Drive emulation, or Genesis if you’re in the US, hasn’t had quite as much attention as its Nintendo arch-rival. Twenty years on, it seems Nintendo won that war.

There are a few decent Mega Drive Android emulators out there, although our top pick is not actually available on Google Play. Gensoid offers good performance and support, even though – like most other Mega Drive emulators – it hasn’t been updated in the last couple of years. Fingers crossed it’ll still work when Android Lollipop lands.

It offers reasonable controls, save/load states and fast forward, which just speeds up the action if you want to speed through a boring non-skippable cutscene.

Best Gameboy Advance emulator for Android: My Boy!

      Price: £2.92
      Available from Google Play

GBA emulator My Boy! is one of the few emulation apps actually made by the people that produced the core emulator software – often it’s someone else’s work, with a new front-end and some extra features applied. In the end the difference is minimal, but might make your feel better about paying for the ‘full’ version.

Dabblers may well be happy with the free edition of My Boy!, though, which simply cuts back a few features. Upgrade to the full My Boy! and you get multiplayer, better save/load support and gyroscope support.

We found this to be one of the most impressive emulators of the lot, both for its good presentation and that the GBA’s relatively limited on-console controls make a better fit for a phone. You don’t have to worry about six face buttons, just two. Phew.

Best Game Gear/Master System emulator for Android: Gearoid

      Price: Free
      Available from The Old Computer

As the systems are so much less popular than the Mega Drive, it’s no wonder there are fewer Master System and Game Gear emulators out there. However, there is one that can handle both of these minor classics: Gearoid.

It’s available for free, and is made by Yongzh, one of the leading figures in the emulation scene. However, you won’t find it in Google Play or any of the main third-party app stores. You’ll need to side-load this one.

While not one of the highest-profile emulators, you still get plenty of extra features including physical controller support and save states.

Best Nintendo DS emulator for Android: DraStic

      Price: £3.75
      Available from Google Play

One of the most recent systems that can be (mostly) successfully emulated by an Android is the Nintendo DS. Bless Nintendo for not really caring about graphics, or anything remotely high-end, hardware-wise.

Trying to fit the DS’s two screens onto one Android display comes with issues, but we didn’t actually find this emulator any fiddlier than the Sega Mega Drive or SNES. It’s remarkably playable, unless you try a game that demands lots of touchscreen and button action at the same time.

Unlike the other DS emulators, DraStic offers excellent performance too. We got full speed play with the Moto G in most games, and we imagine even humbler phones could hack it too.

Best Gameboy emulator for Android: My Old Boy!

      Price: £2.38
      Available from Google Play

The father of our best GBA pick, My Old Boy! plays Gameboy and GBC games. And just like the GBA emulator, it’s a cracker.

Not only are performance and the interface great, we also found that the games make the transition to your phone’s screen with real ease. It’s not hard to imagine why – the way you hold your phone in portrait is quite a lot like holding a Gameboy.

If you’ve turned your nose up at trying something as old as a Gameboy game, give one a try – they’re generally much less problematic control-wise than SNES ones.

Best PS1 emulator for Android: FPse

      Price: £2.27
      Available from Google Play

The console that brought CD-based gaming to the masses (the TurboGrafx CD was nice, but no-one bought it), emulating PlayStation games requires quite a lot of storage. You’re not going to fit dozens on your phone’s internal memory, unlike the rival N64.

However, the relatively low power of the PlayStations internals means most current Android devices can handle the task of emulation pretty well.

There are two hero PlayStation emulators out there at present – FPse and ePSXe. Both cost a couple of pounds and neither offers a trial/demo version.

Which is better? Both are solid, offering good compatibility and performance. They both offer OpenGL support too, letting the phone render the game at a higher resolution than it would have originally been displayed. However, we’ll side with FPse as it was been updated very recently and offers an active forum online. ePSXe feels a bit stagnant in comparison.

Alternatively, RetroArch offers fairly good PS1 emulation for free.

Best NES emulator for Android: Nostalgia.NES

      Price: Free
      Available from Google Play

The console that started it all for many, heading back to some of those NES classics will be like gorging on a nostalgia chocolate box. And several good NES emulators are available for free.

Our pick of the bunch is Nostalgia.NES, currently available in ad-supported form for free, or you can get rid of the ads for a mere £1.20. Much as we found with the Gameboy Advance and Gameboy, the two-button NES controller ports over fantastically to the touchscreen.

Nostalgia.NES offers some great features too, including OpenGL support to improve the graphics a little, light gun emulation, autosave, Wi-Fi multiplayer and game rewinding. Given NES games are often much harder than what we’re used to today, the latter is a nice extra.

Best MAME (arcade) emulator for Android: Mame4Droid

      Price: Free
      Available from Google Play

The MAME project has been around for almost 20 years, and it’s a mammoth endeavour: to emulate every arcade machine. It’s evidence of what indie collaboration online is capable of.

There are two versions of the MAME emulator available on Google Play, one intended for lower-power devices, the other a little more demanding. Each supports a different ROM set. Through the decade-plus development of MAME, these different ROM sets have told you exactly which games are compatible or semi-compatible, at any time.

The higher-end version of Mame4droid supportsover 8000 ROM sets – over 8000 games, in other words. Feature support is excellent, with touchscreen light guns, external controller compatibility and various image filters.

Samsung Galaxy J1 leaked a new mobile input range of Samsung

      Samsung

The South Korean company Samsung has already started work in which they shall be his lower-middle for next year range smartphones 2015. First we met about a new Galaxy E range, which seems to contain midrange phones such as the recently leaked Samsung Galaxy E7, and this time the protagonist is another new smartphone simple: the Samsung Galaxy J1.

The Samsung Galaxy J1 is a mobile with very modest features, virtually input range, which has appeared leaked on the net revealing much of their technical specifications.

According filtration revealed by the US website SamMobile, the Samsung Galaxy J1 will be presented with a screen of 4.3 inches to reach a resolution of WVGA type, ie a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. The processor will be neither a Qualcomm nor MediaTek, but talking about a Marvell processor (model PXDA1908) quad core to reach a clock speed of 1.2 GHz besides being compatible with 64-bits-technology.

The RAM apparently integrate the Samsung Galaxy J1 will have a capacity of 1 GB. The internal storage space will be expandable via an external microSD card type, something to keep in mind knowing that the internal memory of this mobile is established in the 4 gigabytes. The Galaxy J1 will not be a smartphone focused on the multimedia aspect, and therefore the main camera shy comes with a five megapixel sensor, while the front camera host a two-megapixel sensor.

      Samsung

The most curious features of the Samsung Galaxy J1 is that this terminal will come with 4G LTE connectivity, which means that will be compatible with mobile networks ultra-fast Internet that achieve a download speed of up to 150 Mbps. the operating system installed in series correspond to Android, but not in its latest version of Lollipop, but in the version of Android 4.4.2 KitKat. All backed by a battery with 1850 mAh capacity.

To give us an idea of the possible design of the Samsung Galaxy J1 just let’s take a look at your measurements: 129 x 68 x 8.9 mm, which shows us that we are talking about a smartphone that has almost the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Core (129.3 x 67.6 x 8.95 mm) which was submitted to the middle of last year.

By the time the filing date of Samsung Galaxy J1 is unknown. What does seem clear is that during the next year 2015 will see a major change in the names of the most affordable smartphones Samsung: instead of be called Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Core or Galaxy Express, now these terminals will have denominations with a letter and a number, see for example the case of this new Galaxy J1. The reason? Apparently a drop in sales has forced the South Korean company to streamline its portfolio of phones.

      Samsung SE790C curved monitor

      Samsung

The Samsung SE790C is a new monitor with curved screen. It is designed for leisure at home, but also to multitask. Has a slightly curved screen, which increases the feeling of immersion. 3000R design called because curvature has a radius of 3.000 millimeters. Unlike conventional flat monitors, there is no difference in the viewing distance at the edges to the center of the screen. That is the reason for their curved design. That way, users enjoy enhanced viewing experience without distortion in the corners of images. The curvature of the screen produces another effect: the monitor seems much larger than its actual dimensions suggest. In this case, there is a 34 inch diagonal, to envelop the user, appears to be even greater.

It is a multimedia monitor with integrated speakers. The display gives an aspect ratio of 21: 9 with a Ultra-WQHD resolution, that is, 3440 by 1440 pixels. The brightness reaches 300 candelas per square meter, and the contrast ratio (native) is 3.000: 1. The viewing angle extends 178 degrees both vertically and horizontally. Samsung SE790C is constructed of metallic materials, with a clean and clear design that avoids distractions from the images on screen. The pedestal is T-shaped, and its height is adjustable up to 10 inches so you can adapt well to the needs of all users.

      Samsung

The panel response time is only 4 milliseconds and the refresh rate is 60 Hz. You can work with PC and Mac computers. It has a DisplayPort, two HDMI inputs, a headphone output and four USB 3.0 ports. On the other hand, incorporates two integrated speakers, providing an output of 2 to 7 watts. The Samsung SE790C meets the specifications of international certification body TÃœV Rheinland, which establishes standards for color reproduction, color uniformity, lack of flashing and viewing angle. Allows viewing two images simultaneously or one at ultra widescreen format . This is useful for graphic designers who want to compare photographs but also for any multitasking.

The gamers will also be able to enjoy with friends operating a split screen. In fact, this Samsung SE790C can display two different sources of images at once while maintaining the quality of the original source (s PBP or Picture-by-Picture function or an image beside the other). Then there’s the 2.0 PIP function (Picture in Picture, or an image inside another), which is also common in many TVs, which facilitates viewing of video within another image on screen; the user can adjust the size of the sub picture for occupying a quarter of the screen and place it in any position you want.

      Samsung NX200 Smart Camera Reviews

      Samsung NX200 Smart Camera Reviews

      Introduction

Samsung NX200 Smart Camera-After a year of camera Samsung NX100 waltz, now comes with the name of the successor series Samsung NX200. Camera Compact System Camera (CSC) is present as the challenge of other manufacturers who also gave birth to a kind of camera, such as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1, Sony NEX-5N, and the Olympus PEN E-P3. Also continue NX10 which is Samsungs first mirrorless camera, NX200 has a CMOS sensor APS-C sensor DSLR cameras are widely used.

Samsung NX200 is wrapped with metal body and a number of improvements from the previous series. NX200 comes with 2X the price of the NX100 and OIS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. If the NX100, there are some issues regarding the speed, both in terms of performance and autofocus, and a lot of noise at high ISO usage. However, Samsung heard of this problem and fix it on the NX200 Series.

Samsung NX also increases the sensor on this new series. If the NX100 NX200 while using 14.6 MP 20.3 MP use. However, this amount is still less when compared to Sonys sensor NEX-7 is at 24.3 MP. However, the 20.3 MP NX200 is larger than most DSLR that uses the average 16-18MP. AF system also uses a new system. Autofocus on the NX200 is faster than its predecessor. According to Samsung, autofokusnya speed is 100ms.

In the continuous shooting mode, NX200 able menambil images up to 7fps. While in video mode, NX200 capable of taking video at up to Full HD 1080p with 30fps in MP4 format. This camera also offers sensitivity up to ISO 12800. In theory, the high ISO is very helpful when shooting in low light. On the features of Magic, Magic Frame, there were 13 and 10 filter effect is interesting. Among them is a fish eye filter and 3D, as well as taking panorama.
      Samsung NX200 Smart Camera

      Samsung NX200 Smart Camera Specification
      Design and Menu Control

Body Samsung NX200 uses metal material, making it more robust and sturdy. Body shape is slightly different with NX100 NX200. On the NX200, form a larger hand grip and grip on the camera like a DSLR. While the setting speed / zoom in the preview mode is placed after the control menu. We feel this placement is a bit annoying. It was a little into a bit stymied by the control menu. In addition the position of the shutter button is parallel with the body. This position also makes it a bit uncomfortable when pressed, due to the shape of DSLR-like grip, shutter button is usually made at a slight angle to the front to adjust where your index finger.

Difference between NX100 and NX200 design other is speaker placement. Position the speakers moved to the position of the control menu, make the sound more out of hand and not blocked. On the upper also has a pair of quality stereo microphone, but the NX200 no slot for adding an external microphone. Control over the menu consists of the Manual, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Program, Smart, Movie, Scene, Panorama, Magic, and Lens Priority Mode. There is also a hotshoe flash that can be installed or viewfinder.

Pictorial keys trash (trash) in the lower right corner is the same as the NX100. This key function allows users to delete files directly. These custom buttons can also be used as a replacement of the White-Balance. But we also do not like the placement of this button, the position that too often makes right hand was accidentally depressed.

Another change is on the record. On the NX200, Samsung added a button that makes the record easier to use the video recording. NX200 uses AMOLED screen with a width of 3 inches.

Section there is a hole right side USB and HDMI are wrapped so as not easily soiled by the dust. At the bottom there is a screw that can be used to use a tripod. While the memory card slot inside the battery hole.

While the menu settings on the camera is fairly not complicated and easily selected. An explanation of the menu also appears a few seconds later.

      Performance

The first interesting thing we found when trying NX200 is, this camera is ready to use quickly. When we turn, we recorded a time of 1.3 seconds from power is off to a condition ready for a slingshot.

The camera is able to capture seven images per second at full resolution 5472 x 3648. While in burst mode, NX200 able to take pictures up to 30 shots a single tap on a resolution of 2736 x 1824. The process of storing 30 images once snap is a little long, but when the place of storage, display image is not locked. This camera can still be used to capture images while the storage process is underway.

In the RAW format, continuous shooting only 7 frames per second, while the burst mode is off to RAW. The storage process is much longer than the RAW JPEG, because RAW files are large. When the process of saving RAW takes place, the screen is locked and had to wait for the process is finished if you want to take the next picture.
      Samsung Smart Camera

Samsung NX200 Smart Camera adds video recording capabilities up to Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) with a speed of 30fps. There was also another recording option, which is 1280 x 720 at 30fps or 60fps, 640 x 40 and 320 x 240 at 30fps. In theory, of course 60fps recording speed can produce a finer image than 24fps/25fps/30fps. To see the video, please see the video below. NX200 video recording can also be used manually or autofocus. Autofocus feature is especially helpful for users who are less familiar with the manual focus. But when we tried it, not too fast autofocus works but still very helpful. But we find these constraints autofocus while recording an object with a light low-light, AF is having trouble finding a focal point of the object.

The video below is in a state of low-light. We tried to record a phone in autofocus mode, but the NX200 seen trouble finding a focal point of the object. In the second-to-10 to the end, we change the focus mode manually.

      Features

Samsung NX200 features a panorama, this mode also exists on the Sony NEX. But Samsungs way of making panorama with Sonny is somewhat different. Samsung make a panorama with video, while Sony makes panoramic images taken of their own. Choice movement on the panorama mode is to the right / left or up / down. The results of full panoramic image resolution is 1120 pixels (height) or 1600 pixels (width). Way of taking panorama is also fairly easy. Simply press the shutter and move the camera slowly. Images will be recorded during the shutter is pressed and there is a mini preview when taking panorama.

The results of this panorama looks nice and can be used to measure the size of the media is not large. At a location where we tested, the results are panoramic NX200 ghost effect (ghosting), look at pictures of cars are white box on the left. While at another location on the stationary object, ghost effects do not appear. See the picture that we took the following graffiti.

Another helpful feature on the NX200 is Correct Distortion. This feature corrects image distortion that often occurs in wide lens. When we tried to activate this feature, the resulting image is much better than without Distortion Correct. Look at the difference in the photos below. To enable this feature, go to the Custom menu.

      Samsung Smart Camera

Some other features are a Smart Filter and the Magic Frame. Filters (effects) are available in pretty much NX200, the vignetting effect, miniature, fish eye, sketch, defog, halftone dots, soft focus, an old movie, old movies 2 and negative. In the fish eye effect, the picture is similar to when we take pictures using a fish eye lens. With similar results is, of course, we could save money to buy a fish eye lens that cost a bit expensive.

Another interesting effect is a miniature. This effect makes the photos we snap, as if we were the object snap miniature (mini-shaped building). To take a picture of a miniature, should be much lower position of the object from the camera. See an example we take the following miniature.

      Image Quality and Noise

We tested the use of ISO Samsung NX200 on a red apple. In the test, ISO 100 produces crystal clear images without noise. At ISO 200, the results of our apples that look much sharper picture, but when viewed in detail, noise already there even a little. Here are the results of ISO 100.

      Smart Camera Reviews

ISO 400 the camera produced this visible increase in noise from ISO 200, yet more subtle, while the sharp effects such as the one at ISO 200 is more diminished. At ISO 800 noise also increased, but still fairly unforgivable. Look at the comparison of ISO 1600 with ISO 3200 up to 12800. It appears that a significant increase in noise.

We also did a test a test image on the RAW format. RAW images with speed, aperture and auto WB produces contrast and sharpness are slightly different from the JPEG. This difference we saw when RAW images are converted to JPEG using the default Samsung apps. The following photos are the result of the RAW converted to JPEG using the software built by Samsung.

In the JPEG image, apple images look a bit darker but sharper. As for RAW images, resulting in brighter images but with a sharpness that is more subtle.

      Movie

In the Movie mode, Samsung NX200 is capable of recording full HD quality video (1920 x 1080) with 30 fps. While other recording option is the quality of 720p at 30 fps and 60 fps. When we tried recording with full HD resolution at 30 fps, the result looks pretty good. Lighting does not change and the auto focus works well. While sharpness is still unsatisfactory. For full HD-quality video recording, the file is stored with a duration of 5 seconds with a size 8.58 MB in MP4 format.

Recording our second try with HD resolution (1280 x 70) at 60 fps. The result, a more smooth motion video. Try to note the difference between video on the video below. Video recording at speeds below 60 fps looks more comfortable and minimal ghost effects as seen in the video above. Unfortunately the recording speed of 60 fps is not there at full HD resolution, and only at HD resolutions only. Duration video below takes 5 seconds for 8.44 MB memory in MP4 format.

      Samsung Camera Reviews

      Conclusion

Mirrorless NX200 series is Samsungs latest camera and the first use APS-C sensor of 20.3 MP. This sensor camera to beat its competitors, Sony Alpha NEX-5N (16.1 MP) and the Olympus PEN E-P3 (12.3 MP). Furthermore this sensor size is also above average for most DSLR on the market. The ability to record full HD video to appeal to the Compact System Camera (CSC) is. Video recording can also use the manual controls. While recording with autofocus also works but has problems when recording in low-light situation.

To ISO quality, NX200 very good at low ISO. While noise at ISO 1600 and 3200 starts to look a lot of noise, especially at ISO 12800.

Some features, such as the frame and the filter is in the body of this camera adds a sense of completeness. Panorama mode is also easy to use for the novice user. While for 3D, the results are not much different from normal. Smart control menu option also helps a novice user. On this menu there is a macro feature, sports, night mode and other features. Users who operate in this mode the camera is using a pocket camera seemed full auto. Very practical.

Samsung NX200 Smart Camera does not have internal flash. But do not worry, the sales package we received, NX200 includes a mini-sized external flash that can help capture low-light objects. In addition, there are lens-hood for the lens kit that was brought in paketan Samsung NX200.

Another interesting capability is the full HD resolution video recording. In addition, the NX200 is capable of producing 60 images per second. Magnitude of this velocity produces a smoother movement. But this new rate of 60 fps at a resolution of HD Samsung pinned.

      Pros:

Good image quality and fine detail at high resolution.
Small ISO produces crystal clear images.
Stylish yet compact body design of the SLR
Interfaces and filters as well as its easy to understand for a novice user
      IFN facilitates custom settings button
Capable of shooting 7 fps continuous shooting at full resolution
Also can be snapped up to 30 fps in burst mode, at a resolution of 5 MP
It could take another picture while the image storage process is underway
Time livelihood camera (startup) fairly quickly
Can manually control in video mode
      LCD display with AMOLED technology
The lens can be replaced with other NX lens

      Disadvantages:

      Long storage process RAW
The location of the memory card under (along with batteries), so that closed when the camera is tripod mounted
There is no slot for an external microphone
      Not included external viewfinder
      Less long battery life
Handrails rather hot when the old camera used

Googles Project Tango Empowering Your Views in 3D

Has anyone ever thought about a 3D smartphone, Google has been working on it since last year, aiming to provide a broader awareness of all the visible objects in natural environment.

"Google Project Tango": The Most Advanced Technology Project by Google

Currently "Project Tango" aims to provide mobile devices "a human-scale understanding of space & motion", according to Johnny Lee, project lead at Googles Advanced Technology and Projects group. Lee and his project team also wrote, "Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.".

This 3D technology can help people in endless ways. Users can use this technology just wailking around their house to get the 3D dimensions of a furniture before buying it, or to locate the place where a particular object is showcased in a store, and it can even help visually-impaired person to navigate in an area which is unknown to him.

Weve arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. - Carl Sagan

Currently the "Project Tango" includes a prototype model having 5" size with Android, combined robotics and vision technology to track 3D motions of the phone while developing a 3-D model of the targeted place. The company is also seeking professional developers to distribute their already arranged 200 development kits by March 14, 2014.

Google has been involved with various universities and research labs in 9 countries to develop this platform, including university of Minnesota, German Tech firm Bosch, Gearge Washington Universityand Open Source Robotics Foundation.

Amazon announces new Kindle Voyage for 199 and new Kindle for 79

Amazon has announced two new models of its popular e-reader, an updated version of their standard Kindle, now with a touchscreen, and a brand new Kindle Voyage.
The Kindle Voyage is the seventh generation model in the Kindle series. The latest version features an updated Paperwhite display, which has a higher resolution and a pixel density of 300PPI. It is the highest resolution, highest contrast, and highest brightness display on any Kindle so far.

The new display has a flush glass covering on top that is scratch resistant. To prevent glare and reflections, the display is micro-etched to diffuse light. Amazon also claims the texture of the glass is designed to match the texture of paper.
Another cool feature is adaptive display brightness. It automatically adjusts the display brightness to the ambient light. While that isn’t particularly new, it also automatically reduces the brightness of the display over time as you read to reduce strain on the eyes from staring at a bright screen for too long.
Another new feature is PagePress. Along the side of the display are sensors that detect when you press the screen with a light press and turn the page. The Kindle responds with a light haptic feedback, which along with the press sensitivity, can be adjusted.
Amazon is giving away free 3G for users to download books instead of hunting for Wi-Fi, which works in over 100 countries. The 3G comes without any fees or contracts.
All of this is put inside the thinnest Kindle body yet, which is 7.6mm thick and made with a magnesium back. The Kindle Voyage also gets new Origami Cover, that works as a case and also folds to become a stand for reading.
Along with the Kindle Voyage, Amazon has also updated the cheapest standard Kindle model in their lineup. The new Kindle now has a touchscreen display, along with a 20% faster processor, and twice the storage.
The new Kindle Voyage is priced at $199, while the new Kindle will cost just $79. The older Kindle Paperwhite is still available for $119.

Xiaomi Redmi 1S Review Rewriting History Once Again

We dont think it is too far-fetched to say thatXiaomi is the most talked-about new brand on the Indian tech scene today. The Chinese company has not spent any money on advertising and in fact seems pretty laid back about all the fuss it has caused by selling good phones at shockingly low prices.
Although its unique strategy of using online flash sales has aggravated quite a few customers, we must remember that Xiaomi is still a startup and doesnt have the financial or logistical might of the Samsungs and Apples of the world.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_box_ndtv.jpg
Now, the company has temporarily put sales of the Mi 3 on hold to concentrate on an even lower priced offering, the Redmi 1S. As with the Mi 3, this phone boasts of specs that are usually found in phones that cost at least twice as much, such as the much-loved Motorola Moto G. Weve played with the Redmi 1S extensively to tell you in detail how well it performs. This phone could once again change the dynamics of the smartphone market.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_cover1_ndtv.jpg
      Look and feel
Unlike in the days of the Nokia 7280, which looked like a lipstick case, phone companies are not experimenting a lot with design. Smartphones today are all pretty much the same predictable candybar shape, and most dont even really think about that.

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S is yet another candybar smartphone with a staid look that does not attract attention. Its unexciting, but may not a bad thing for a lot of people.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_capacitive_buttons_ndtv.jpg
The Redmi 1S measures 137x69x9.9mm and is definitely not slim. Moreover, its 158g weight makes it heavier than a lot of other phones in this price range. The rear cover is removable and Xiaomi is expected to offer colourful replacement panels priced at Rs. 459 each, which will be a good way to give your phone some kind of distinction. The Redmi 1S is sold with a matte grey rear, and gripping it is not an issue.
The primary camera and flash sit on the upper part of the rear. The loudspeaker is just a small slit in the top right corner. A Mi logo in silver is etched on the lower back. Opening the rear cover is fairly simple, and the battery is removable.
The front is mostly taken up by the 4.7-inch screen, which has thick plastic borders. The three capacitive button labels which sit below the screen are printed in red. Oddly, the LED indicator is below the home button. Above the display are the earpiece and the front-facing camera. On the bottom edge is a microphone and a Micro-USB port for charging/data transfer. A 3.5mm jack sits on the top. The volume rocker and power button are on the right edge of the phone.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_bottom_ndtv.jpg
      Specifications and software
For a phone priced so low, the Redmi 1S has jaw-dropping specs. Housed inside the body of the Redmi 1S are top-quality hardware components including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.6GHz with an integrated Adreno 305 GPU. There is 1GB of RAM for applications and 8GB of internal storage, of which 6.14GB is available to the user. You can increase the storage space by up to 32GB using a microSD card.

The Redmi 1S has an 8-megapixel BSI camera with flash which can record 1080p videos. It also has a 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera. There is a 2,000mAh battery. The phone accepts two Mini-SIM cards, but only one will be usable on 3G networks. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 round out the list of connectivity options.
The 4.7-inch LCD has a resolution of 720x1280 pixels, which is phenomenal compared to other phones in this price range. The screen is crisp, and its 312ppi density makes it difficult to discern individual pixels. It is protected by AGC Dragontrail 2 glass. We tried scratching the screen with a coin and a scissor, and neither left any visible scratches. On the flipside, the screen looks washed out when viewed at an angle, and sunlight legibility is bad thanks to the super reflective front panel.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_mem_card_ndtv.jpg
The Redmi 1S runs Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) with Xiaomis MIUI v5 skin on top of it. This is the only drawback considering a lot of phones in this price range come with Android 4.4 (KitKat) pre-installed. Xiaomi has promised a software update before the end of this year that will bring MIUI v6 on top of Android 4.4 KitKat.
MIUI goes farther than most Android skins when it comes to customisation. It offers a lot of depth and a ton of features. It is incredibly responsive to touch and, unlike stock Android, has all the app icons lined up on the homescreen itself. There are also tonnes of useful software tweaks. We noticed that Xiaomi has included a Lite Mode which resembles Windows Phones UI. The most important and frequently used apps are available in the form of large easy-access tiles.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_right_screenshot2_ndtv.jpg
Xiaomis MIUI is a community-driven exercise. In one of our interactions with Xiaomi Vice President Hugo Barra, he outlined one feature that was added after a users suggestion. Essentially, the phone can vibrate when a call you make is picked up by the party on the other end, which is both convenient and also cuts down on exposure to radiation, which is higher when a call is being established.
You can swipe up or down the Music or Notes icons to make the respective apps launch in a pop-up mode. The Messages app has a "secret messages" area that can be accessed by swiping down from within the app. Even more interestingly, a few app icons work somewhat like Live Tiles (seen on Windows Phones). For example, the Calendar and Weather app icons display relevant information such as the time and temperature.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_right_screenshot1_ndtv.jpg
The Flipkart app is preloaded on the phone, which is to be expected since the phone is sold exclusively via the e-commerce platform. The default music player is feature-rich and fun to use. There is also a fairly powerful WPS Office app pre-installed for reading and editing documents. Facebook comes preloaded as well.
There are a ton of themes which is great for customisation, but in our opinion they all look really cartoonish. In fact, MIUI itself is very colourful. Ultimately, this boils down to preference.
You can read more of our thoughts on MIUI in the Xiaomi Mi 3 review.
      Camera
We want to get one thing out of the way: the primary 8-megapixel camera on the Xiaomi Redmi 1S is the best anyone can find for a phone priced below Rs. 10,000 right now.

In our daylight shots the camera managed to capture some really good images. The only problem we noticed was the software processing worked overtime to reduce noise in the images by smudging details slightly. Otherwise, colours were natural. Even in macro mode, the phone performs really well. We were shocked after the low-light performance test. The camera managed to capture some details which even more expensive smartphones generally fail to do. The quality of the 1080p video is also fairly decent.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_camera1_ndtv.jpg

The camera software does a lot of processing after images are captured by the 1.6-megapixel front camera. This smudges details in order to beautify a persons face. These selfies should suffice for sharing on social networks.

The camera app looks like a slightly tweaked version of the default app from Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). However, it is easy to use. By default, it starts up in simple mode which strips away a lot of the feature that the camera offers. Wed suggest that users switch to the advanced mode to exploit the full potential of this camera.

      Performance
At the risk of sounding repetitive, we start another section by stating there is no other phone in this price range that performs as well as the Xiaomi Redmi 1S. If someone put a gun to our heads and forced us to come up with one problem, it would be that only around 400MB of RAM is available after the OS and services have loaded. As long as you dont open tons of apps together, it shouldnt be too much of a problem.

For the most part, the phone works well and we didnt face any heating issues either. We tried Shadowgun: Deadzone and Dead Trigger 2, both on Ultra High settings, just to push the GPU. The phone lagged only during intensive fight sequences, which we expected from such specifications anyway. We dont think prospective buyers will be disappointed with the gaming performance.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_battery_ndtv.jpg
We also ran a bunch of synthetic benchmarks. The Redmi 1S scored 21,439 in AnTuTu 5 and 10,752 in Quadrant, which are leagues ahead of phones competing in this price range. In our graphics benchmarks 3D Mark Ice Storm and GFXbench, the phone scored 5274 and 10.4fps, which are both comparable to scores of much higher priced phones.
We played a few sample videos to test if the phone could handle them and found that the 1080p sample video encoded at 40mbps didnt run, which was a bit of a letdown - 1080p videos encoded at a lower bit rate ran fine though. The tiny speaker can get really loud but at its highest volume the sound distorts.
Xiaomi doesnt bundle earphones in the box and for testing purposes we used our reference headphones. The sound quality was really good. While testing via the Bluetooth A2DP profile using our Plantronics Backbeat Go 2 earphones, the volume level was really low for some odd reason.
In our rigorous battery test, the Xiaomi Redmi 1S tramples its competition mercilessly. It lasted a good 8 hours and 27 minutes of video playback on a loop. In everyday usage shuffling between 3G and Wi-Fi, it wasnt significantly better than other offerings, but should still last you a day of heavy usage.
      xiaomi_redmi_1s_rear_ndtv.jpg
      Verdict
Xiaomi continues the trend of aggressive pricing first set by Motorola earlier this year. Samsung and Micromax, who were comfortably ruling the roost in the under-10k price segment, have had the carpet pulled out from under them.

Even more expensive phones such as the Moto E (Review | Pictures). The Micromax Unite 2 (Review | Pictures) cannot match the Redmi 1S with its reliable performance, great camera, crisp screen and excellent battery life. The only major drawback we see is the lack of Android 4.4 (KitKat) at the moment.
Looking at this phones specs, it is easy to make comparisons to the Moto G but we are consciously avoiding that at the moment since it is very nearly at the end of its life in the market, and will soon be succeeded by the Moto G2 (or whatever the final phone will be called).
At the moment the Xiaomi Redmi 1S is the best buy under Rs. 8,000. The Chinese startup is expected to sell the phone starting September 2 using the same flash sale format. In the first round, 40,000 units will be put up for sale and we expect them all to be gone in a matter of seconds. We can easily recommend this phone because the price-to-performance ratio is unbelievably good - and thankfully, this isnt a case of too good to be true.

Poland and its S800-based Galaxy Note 3 unites were the first to taste the Android 4.4 KitKat with the latest TouchWiz upgrade. It seems the update has had no major issues as now Samsung is pushing it to other regions as well.

      Blackberry Passport Review

      Blackberry Passport

      Blackberry Passport

Many, many articles have been written about BlackBerrys fall from grace; about how it completely failed to read and respond to a changing market, and the sequence of poor judgment calls that transformed its product line from a dominant cultural force into a vaguely unpleasant memory. This is a company that managed to alienate its core user base, eliminate the feature they loved most, and not understand for years what it had been doing wrong. The post-decline BlackBerry product line has had more misses than hits and the appeal of the platform has all but evaporated.
And still, the company isnt dead. Still, there are people who cling to their old phones or cry that the ones theyve had to move to just dont feel right. Still, there are people who desperately want the company to release a phone that feels and functions just like a classic QWERTY BlackBerry and will race to buy it as soon as that happens.

      Our Reviews

The Passport is the best BlackBerry 10 device you can buy, and comes with a number of flagship-caliber specs. But its odd shape and size, as well as its weird keyboard, may be a turnoff for many. At 128 x 90.3mm, the phone really is as wide as it seems -- its wider than most large-screened phones on the market -- but BlackBerry insists this is a feature rather than a setback. Because its using a 4.5-inch square display thats 30 percent wider than an average 5-inch phone, the company claims youll read up to 60 characters per line and get a better viewing experience. In a way, thats true: I enjoyed reading articles and e-books on the Passport because text didnt have to wrap or get cut off as often, but the trade-off was an awkward one-handed fit and more frequent vertical scrolling. As I mentioned in the introduction, the Passport keyboard is unlike any other Ive tried on a smartphone. This isnt simply a matter of me going back to my roots as a BlackBerry owner years ago and getting reacquainted with the traditional layout used on the Bolds and Curves; I have to learn a brand-new design. Lets get the obvious out of the way: Nobody is moving to BlackBerry for its robust ecosystem of apps. To make up for the fact that developers simply arent rushing to make BB10 apps, the company has done the best it can to provide enough meaningful programs and content for its users. Now on version 10.3 of its OS, BlackBerry has come a long way from when BB10 debuted a year and a half ago, but its not far enough to be competitive. Unfortunately, its instead a hodge-podge of options that confuses most users: two app stores and a method of side loading Android 4.3 (or lower) apps. Look, if youre in the market for a smartphone with a great camera, BlackBerry has never been worthy of your consideration. Its simply been too focused on wooing corporations and productivity-minded customers to really put much effort in its imaging assets. Ever since BB10 came out, however, the phone maker has changed its tune and pushed out nicer cameras with higher resolution; the Q10 had an 8MP shooter when it came out last year, and BlackBerry is bumping up the quality here with a 13MP rear camera. (The 2MP selfie cam isnt worth writing home about, but it certainly could be worse.)
