Googles Project Tango Empowering Your Views in 3D

Has anyone ever thought about a 3D smartphone, Google has been working on it since last year, aiming to provide a broader awareness of all the visible objects in natural environment.

Currently "Project Tango" aims to provide mobile devices "a human-scale understanding of space & motion", according to Johnny Lee, project lead at Googles Advanced Technology and Projects group. Lee and his project team also wrote, "Yet, our mobile devices assume that physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.".

This 3D technology can help people in endless ways. Users can use this technology just wailking around their house to get the 3D dimensions of a furniture before buying it, or to locate the place where a particular object is showcased in a store, and it can even help visually-impaired person to navigate in an area which is unknown to him.

Currently the "Project Tango" includes a prototype model having 5" size with Android, combined robotics and vision technology to track 3D motions of the phone while developing a 3-D model of the targeted place. The company is also seeking professional developers to distribute their already arranged 200 development kits by March 14, 2014.


Google has been involved with various universities and research labs in 9 countries to develop this platform, including university of Minnesota, German Tech firm Bosch, Gearge Washington Universityand Open Source Robotics Foundation.

This advanced platform is described as ultra-low power, high-performance delivering architecture of advance computional chips enabling the device to "intelligently distinguish and contextualize the surroundings".

Xiaomi might work on its Project Ara


The photo represents the actual "Project Ara" sponsored by Motorola. It was mainly inspired by the Phoneblocks buzz.

It is a revolutionary concept build from modular parts which have specific functions like one for the CPU, another one for the internal storage, etc... You upgrade only what you need, for example, if you need more RAM, instead of the 1 GB part, replace it with the new 3 GB part.

Lately, Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun said on his weibo account that such an idea was discussed and they are now debating whether to pursue this or not.

A Virtual Reality Headset Project Morpheus for PS4 by Sony

Sony is coming-up with its virtual reality Headset calling it "Project Morpheus" for PS4. This device is named after a character "Morpheus" from the movie "Matrix". People across the world are excited about virtual realty device by Sony.

Sony is now moving towards the virtual reality bandwagon as the Oculus has gained popularty among the users. According to the president of Sonys Worldwide Studio, Shuhei Yoshida, they have been working on the VR prototypes since they started the Playstation way back in 2009 and in 2010 they just created a separate unit just for VR. 

According to Yoshida, their current prototype has the following specs.


»  1080p display
»  1000Hz motion detection
»  Headset connected to the PS4 alongwith a 5-meter wire
»  Positional/rotational head tracking
»  Currently supported by a single headset.
»  It also works for people with glasses
»  Tracking is handled by same camera tracking PS4 Move controllers
»  An “Open air” design prevents the lenses from fogging up. (It’ll be interesting to see how they prevent light leaking in)
»  Content pushed to the Morpheus can be mirrored to a TV, but it sounds like it can handle asymmetric gameplay (different things on each screen) as well.
